ZAISAN, or ZAISANSK , a See also:town of See also:Russian Central See also:Asia, in the See also:province of See also:Semipalatinsk, near the See also:Chinese frontier, at an See also:altitude of 2200 ft. and near the S.E. corner of See also:Lake Zaisan. Pop. (1897) 4471• Lake Zaisan, situated in an open valley between the See also:Altai range on the See also:north-See also:east and the Tarbagatai on the See also:south, lies at an altitude of 1355 ft. It has a length of 65 m., a width of 14 to 30 m., an See also:area of 707 sq. m., and a maximum See also:depth of 50 ft. Its See also:water is fresh, as it receives the See also:Black Irtysh and the Kendyrlyk from the east, and several small streams from the See also:west, all of which leave the lake at its north-west extremity by the See also:White Irtysh. The See also:fisheries, which yield abundantly, are in the hands of the Siberian See also:Cossacks. The lake is generally frozen from the beginning of See also:November to the end of See also:April.
