The melody continues to inhabit the high register, and in the ekkrousmos on Galatân it goes up to 0292-003.gif. We have not seen this note before, but it occurs again among the increasingly exiguous fragments of the following lines, which are not worth transcribing here.
The total range of the paean is an octave and a half, thirteen different notes being used.3 The singers were accompanied by aulos and kithara, as the text itself indicates. The principles of melodic respect for the word accents, as described on p. 199, are followed quite carefully. The only breach of them, apart from the doubtful case of thnatoîs mentioned above, is at pheróploio in the chromatic second section. This does not, of course, mean that the melodic line
