This has the same character as the preceding passage and forms a single section with it, but the compass now goes down to f. A characteristic five-note pattern of rising and falling semitones appears in the parallel half-cadences at anakídnatai and anamélpetai, and in the word aióois 'shimmering'. The sentence about the pipe, ligy-krekei, is entirely in conjunct motion, gliding along as smoothly as a snake.

With a clean octave leap we shake off all chromaticism and return to the pure upper reaches of the scale. This part is mostly confined to the notes c' d' e' f', with e' as the focus. The 0291-002.gif at thnatois is a surprising diversion, especially as it contradicts the circumflex accent; a probable conjecture by Reinach replaces 0291-003.gif by 0291-004.gif.
