HOW TO USE the PHOTOGRAPHIC GUIDE TO MINERAL SPECIES

HOW TO USE

If you are reading this, you probably already know how to use this CD of mineral photographs! We have produced this CD as to be analogous to browsing a site on the Internet - only, you are browsing your CD player instead.

As in any Internet web site, you select hyperlinks, a subject that is underlined (as in the items listed in the left frame), and click once after positioning the mouse pointer over the desired item, or click regions inside of images, called image maps.  For example, to look at images of the mineral adamite, click on the letter 'A' in the image map, above, then select adamite from the list of minerals having names starting with the letter A that appears in the left frame. To view an alternate depiction, click on any of the smaller images (thumbnails) in the right frame. In a similar fashion, to see minerals of the adamite group, click on 'GROUPS' in the image map, above, then click on adamite group. To see minerals from a particular country, such as Mexico, select the locality letter range with the corresponding initial letter, in this case 'I-N', then select Mexico from the list.

Interactive Map Feature:  When the name of a country or state is selected in the left frame, either from the list of available countries or states or from the particular country or states guide page, the geographical position of that country or state is illustrated in a map in the right frame.   By selecting any named feature on the map, an appropriate guide will appear in the left frame, if that guide is available.  Clicking on 'LOCALITIES' in the image map will load a map of the world.

A Note on Localities:  Localities are indexed by country, except for the United States, where localities are indexed by state. Bold entries are counties, provences, and similar administrative units. Top-level entries (fully left justified) not in bold typeface indicate a locality not contained within a higher level administrative unit or an obscure locality that could not be placed in any particular region of the country in question.

TIPS and TRICKS:

Creating Bookmarks.  You can create a bookmark in your web browser, making loading the CD a one-step experience.  You should bookmark the opening screen, as bookmarks to frame sets (the three part screen your viewing now) may not work properly.  To create a new bookmark, in Netscape Communicator version 4 or greater, from the menu select Communicator, Bookmarks, Edit.  In the new window that opens, from the menu select File, New Bookmark..   Enter a name, such as PHOTO GUIDE, and then for location type X:/PG2MS.htm, where X is the drive letter of your CD player.  In the future, you can select Bookmarks from the tool bar, and click on PHOTO GUIDE to open the CD, provided the CD is loaded.

Enabling JAVASCRIPT.  For best appearance of the pages and improved functionality with any browser, 'Java' and 'JavaScript' should be enabled.   For Netscape Communicator - select Edit, Preferences, Advanced and check the appropriate boxes.  See your browser's help file for further details.

Remember to use the forward and back buttons of your browser in addition to clicking on the hyperlinks. Also remember to make full use of scroll bar, as some pages contain more than one image, arranged vertically.

Maximize the window size of your browser.

Reduced the size of the fonts used by the browswer. In Netscape Communicator, select Edit, Preferences, Appearance, Fonts, and change the size of both the variable and fixed width fonts to 10.

Get more screen 'real-estate' by reducing the size of the toolbars.  In Netscape Communicator - select View, Show, then deselect Location and Personal Toolbars.  Also, you can select Edit, Preferences, then select Appearance, then select 'Show toolbars as Text Only'.

Set your video mode for at least 16-bit color (High-Color) or 24-bit color (True-Color) and screen resolution to at least 1024 x 768.  This is accessed in the 'settings' tab of the Display Properties icon in the Control Panel in Windows 95/98.  See your operating system instructions for further information.  You can view a color chart as an aid

Italicized names (for example, aquamarine), are not valid mineral names.

If your web browser is attempting to connect to the Internet every time you load the Mineral Photo CD, you can change the default home page of your browser to be a blank page. See your browser's documentation on how to do this, or set your home page to 'about:blank'.
