The inscription of Schaff characters running down the left side of the this tablet reads in Numidian grammar: Territories of the King. This is one of the primary reasons we believe this system of lines to be indicating something of measure or numerical standard. This type of indexing system is also found on hundreds of artifacts dug up around the ancient city of Carthage located in north Africa along the Mediterranean coast. There, the numbering system would almost cause one to assume that the strokes are mathematical in nature.
