This map of Islandia is a double-page copper-engraved map by Mattias Quadus from his 1608 atlas printed in Cologne, titled Frascidulus Geographicus. Based on an earlier map by Ortelius, the map is embellished with several sea creatures believed to exist at that early date. A few of the animals do resemble whales blowing their snouts, although whales were little known of at that time. While the Ortelius map featured a paragraph of information in the lower right hand corner, Quadus chose to feature a picture of the Danish King Christian IV. This is a rare map and very unusual to see for sale. The map measures 29 cm x 22 cm. There are no tears, rips or repairs on the map, but there is slight damp-staining in the margins of the top and bottom of the map, but not on the map itself. Listed price is $1400.00. Shipping, handling and insurance, add $25.00
