Part of an iambic trimeter, with four alternative musical settings, perhaps to illustrate different styles. Each has either one note per syllable or two. All except the first start on g. All but the third share a similar melodic contour, which seems related to the word accents.
The notation is Lydian (modulating to Hypolydian in 2 and 4). The sign I have interpreted as is oddly written and (if rightly identified) alien to the key.
