The metrical structure is the same as in 40 (which may suggest a similarly slow tempo), and so is the key. But the melody goes a fourth lower, encompassing altogether an octave and a fifth, and the tonality is different. The tonic is f. The melody often dwells on g, and fourths and fifths (f-c', c-g, g'-d', d'-g) play a conspicuous role in it. The third bar of the first line recurs in line 5. |
