In 1990 the editors of this volume were approached by the Classics editor of E.J. Brill with the request to compile a volume which would attempt to show the applicability of the methodologies of various modern theories of literary criticism to the study of Greek and Roman literature. In selecting authors, the editors have aimed at a representative coverage, in terms of themes, gender, Latin-Greek, and even nationality, although the requirement that papers be produced in (or translated into) English did place constraints on the selection of authors from the non-English-speaking world. Most of the papers printed here are new, some are revised versions of papers presented elsewhere. The editors would like to express their thanks to Emilie van Opstall for her help in compiling the general bibliography. |
