paradigmatic value, add to its comic effect and offer material for pragmatic analysis.
Before our scene begins Juppiter announces (873875) that he will now take on the form of Amphitruo again and wreak further havoc. Then Alcumena delivers the following monologue:

ALC. Durare nequeo in aedibus. ita me probri,
stupri, dedecoris a viro argutam meo!
ea quae sunt facta infecta ut reddat clamitat,
quae neque sunt facta neque ego in me admisi arguit;
atque id me susque deque esse habituram putat.
non edepol faciam, neque me perpetiar probri
falso insimulatam, quin ego illum aut deseram
aut satis faciat mi ille atque adiuret insuper,
nolle esse dicta quae in me insontem protulit.

ALC. I can't stay in this house, accused like that
by my husband of shame, dishonor and disgrace.
What's done he insists be undone
and accuses me of what I didn't and couldn't do
and thinks that I'll just shrug it all off.
I certainly won't, and I won't let myself
be falsely accused of disgrace. I'll either leave him
or he'll apologize and swear over and above
that I'm guiltless and he wishes he hadn't said those things.

Thus we know her mood, her intentions, and the prerequisites she has set for reconciliation. Juppiter, who hears all this (whether or not he is omniscient, he is on stage), then tells us what he intends to do:

IVPP. Faciundum est mi illud, fieri quod illaec postulat
si me illam amantem sese studeam recipere,
quando ego quod feci, id factum Amphitruoni offuit
atque illi dudum meus amor negotium
insonti exhibuit, nunc autem insonti mihi
illius ira in hanc et male dicta expetent.

IVPP. I must do what she demands done
if I want her to receive me as her lover;
since what I did hurt Amphitruo
and my passion just now gave him problems
though he was guiltless, now I, though guiltless,
will bear the brunt of her wrath and harsh words.

observes (238, note 9) that "in general, students are well advised to turn back to Austin's often more subtle treatment of the isssues."
